Over the last 3 years, the Sun Protection Foundation has carried out several human sun protection experiments in natural sunlight in places like Hawaii, San Diego, Florida and Peru.
This research has been presented at medical conferences.
62% to 68% of skin sites protected by high SPF, broad spectrum sunscreens exhibited erythema or persistent pigment darkening, the two widely recognized short-term signs of overexposure to UV radiation. These results are not in agreement that the products provided effective broad spectrum, high SPF protection in natural sunlight.
A 30 SPF and 45+ SPF sunscreen tested between 3 SPF and 7 SPF in natural sunlight.
More sun sensitive test subjects were most likely to be overexposed to the sun through these sunscreens in 2 hours of natural sunlight.
The test results do not substantiate that a 30 SPF or even 50 SPF sunscreen provides 2 hours of complete sun protection at 2 hours of sun exposure, the maximum time a sunscreen user should go without reapplication.

We’ve presented our research and conclusions in medical conferences. We invited some of the world’s most recognized photobiology experts and dermatologists to participate. These experts have had more than 100 years of combined sunscreen testing experience.
